Product Spotlight March 2025

One Source is excited to announce the promotion of Sean Goodman to the position of Manager, Field Services Division! 
 
Sean has been an integral member of the field service team since his hiring in July of 2021. He has consistently succeeded in his roles on the OSTS team, moving quickly from Field Service Technician to Senior Technician and taking on a field leadership role. Sean is expert in all the systems we program and has been a mentor to each of our technicians. His responsibilities will now include day to day OSTS business as well as management of the outside and inside staff in that department. Sean will continue to grow and expand this department with a focus on increasing revenue, generating new services, ensuring that our staff is well-trained and well-equipped, and increasing customer satisfaction. 
 
Amanda McLean will continue in her primary role in Specification Sales and will also continue to mentor those on the OSTS team.  We are sincerely grateful for Amanda's leadership during our formative years in the startup business, as she helped build the team and create the required systems and processes that have made it successful and grow. 

Let’s congratulate Sean on his well-deserved promotion!

DAC Chapter Design Award Winners

### Mark Koehler

Mark Koehler had the electrical business in his blood.  His father, Louis, was the “Koehler” in Burdette, Koehler & Murphy (BKM), one of the top engineering firms in Baltimore.  He graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in business, and it was there that he met former One Source president, Jack Floyd, who convinced Mark to join the company (then Downie, Turner & Buress), to work in inside sales.  Mark moved into outside sales in the mid-1980’s, calling on electrical engineers, contractors and distributors, and specializing in lighting.  When DT&B obtained representation of Lutron he focused much of his time on controls systems, and earned Lutron’s expert certification of “Super Rep.”

Mark met his wife Mary Katherine (daughter of DT&B president Carroll Buress) one summer when she came to work at DT&B, and Mark became an owner in the company (and subsequently of One Source Associates) when Carol retired.  Mark served One Source as Vice President of Controls, and brought many of the most complicated controls systems projects sold in the territory to successful completion.  Over the years Mark became a specialist in contractor sales, and is one of One Source’s historically best salespeople.  In recent years Mark has prepared the company for his eventual retirement by imparting his wisdom to others in the organization, selflessly strengthening us for future success.  It is a matter of company history that Mark, not usually one to enjoy long meetings, one day during a particularly protracted discussion over what the merging companies of DT&B and Maryland Lighting should be named, roused himself from a near slumber and said quite simply, “Why don’t we just call it One Source?”  So we did.


### Clarke Utermohle

Clarke Utermohle joined Downie, Turner & Burress (DT&B) in 1984 as an outside salesperson.  He continued in that role for several years before leaving to further his career as a direct sales employee for Hubbell Wiring Devices in 1988.  Clarke was our competitor there for several years and eventually went to work for Lightolier.  He returned home to One Source Associates in 2010, calling on key electrical distributor and contractor customers and closing some of the largest orders in the company’s history.

Clarke’s has been a steady presence with customers and in our office, always reminding us through his actions that it’s possible to be very passionate while remaining respectful and professional at the same time.  His experience working in different aspects of the electrical business made him a particularly effective problem solver who knew how to “get things done.”  Throughout his working years he has remained active as a musician, and plans to spend some of his retirement time furthering his expertise in this regard.  


We will miss Mark’s competence, wisdom and wit, and Clarke’s professionalism and unflappably calm demeanor, and we thank them both for so many wonderful years.

New UL 217 Standards for Fire Safety

We hosted a networking run/walk event in partnership with WILD (Women in Lighting & Design), sponsored by Kelvix, OCL, Lutron, DMF, and ALW. In addition to the 5K portion of the event, there was a silent auction with more than a dozen baskets up for bid, mostly put together by our One Source family. The event brought in $5000 for House of Ruth Maryland, a local battered women's shelter. Thank you to everyone who participated and supported this event! It was a huge success made possible by the involvement of so many parties.

In 2001 it was discovered that exposing the eyes to light in the blue end of the visible spectrum suppresses the production of the sleep hormone, melatonin. New mothers need to get up during the night to care for their babies. This is the time when melatonin is normally flowing. Exposing their eyes to light can cut off the flow. It may also reset their circadian (internal) clock.
On subsequent nights the melatonin may not begin flowing at the normal time making it difficult to fall asleep. Over time, disruption of the circadian rhythm plus sleep deprivation may result in depression. Women suffering postpartum depression were enrolled in a small clinical trial. Some were provided with glasses and light bulbs that block blue light. Others were equipped with glasses and light bulbs that looked colored but did not block the rays causing melatonin suppression. Those with the “real glasses” recovered somewhat more quickly than those with the placebo glasses and light bulbs.
The hypothesis that should be tested in large scale clinical trials is that the risk of postpartum depression can be reduced when a new mother avoids exposing her eyes to blue light when she gets up at night to care for her baby. In the meantime, all new mothers may benefit from using glasses and light bulbs that block blue light when getting up at night to care for their babies.

What Can I Do in Terms Of Regulating Blue Light to Prevent PPD?
Understanding the potential symptoms, regularly attending counseling sessions and learning where and how to get treatment are some examples of PPD prevention. Additionally, orange-tinted sunglasses can be effective in blocking blue light and are recommended for expectant mothers who are consistently having to wake up to use the bathroom or for new moms who are finding themselves getting up every 2-3 hours to feed their babies.

While spending time indoors, at one point or another you’ve likely encountered a flickering light. Flashing on and off like a strobe or disco ball, it can be supremely annoying, but it can also even be dangerous.
Why does flicker occur? To some degree, flicker happens in all light sources with an AC power supply delivered at a frequency of 50 to 60 hertz, meaning the electrical current travels backward and forward 50 to 60 times per second. Flicker happens due to rapid voltage variations, or a “ripple” in a current which then leads to a ripple in light output— a flicker.

All types of lights are susceptible to flicker, including incandescent, halogen, and, yes, even LED bulbs. But the effects aren’t the same for every type of light. In halogen lamps, for example, the filament temperature reacts slowly to changes in electrical currents, so you won’t notice as much of a flicker effect. LEDs respond almost instantly to changes in current, so flicker is much more noticeable.
Besides being a nuisance, <a href="https://www.digikey.com/en/articles/techzone/2012/jul/characterizing-and-minimizing-led-flicker-in-lighting-applications" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the effects</a> of a flickering light can trigger some serious ailments such as headaches, visual impairment, or in extreme cases, epileptic seizures. Even if the flicker is slight, at higher frequencies of 100 to 150 Hz for example, your eye may not consciously register it, but the brain can still detect and react to it, potentially with negative consequences. In particular, athletes in stadiums and warehouse workers could be more susceptible to accidents under poor lighting conditions that could cause a stroboscopic effect.
At home, there are a couple of simple ways to test for LED flicker to prevent bothersome lighting and potential health hazards. First, you can perform a simple flicker test with your smartphone camera. Turn it on and aim it at the light source in question while looking at the image captured on the screen. If you see a series of dark and light bands traveling slowly across the screen, then your light has flicker. If the bands are not that noticeable, you’re in the clear. Smartphone cameras can capture images at a discrete frequency, so they’re reliable tools that clearly register when there is no light.

Il Primitivismo Nella Scultura del Novecento</a>” (transl. “I Am The Other. Giacometti, Picasso and Others. Primitivism in 20th Century Sculpture”) explored works by renowned artists and pieces from different cultures that inspired them.
Illuminating diverse works of art requires precise, balanced lighting. Claudio Cervelli, a lighting designer and AILD (Associazione Italiana Lighting Designer) partner, successfully illuminated the exhibit spanning years, cultures and places with SORAA.

How did the client relationship begin?
An architect I worked with in the past asked me to work with him again to solve the lighting design for this challenging exhibition. The goal was to offer spectacular lighting that would showcase the exhibited works while being mindful of their conservation. The ideal lighting experience was to accompany the visitor throughout the exhibition path, making every detail of the objects pop while transporting them through an exciting and ancestral world.
What lighting challenges did you face and how did SORAA lighting match the specific needs of this project?
The exhibition’s curators placed materials with different light sensitivities side by side, which required a precise and flexible lighting approach. Achieving a good balance of light levels while leveraging the <a href="https://www.ecosenselighting.com/products/accessories/soraa-snap-system/">SORAA Snap System<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/16.0.1/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></a> allowed me to solve these challenges. The great quality of light and the powerful and expressive system of snap-on lenses make a world of difference.
SORAA’s excellent color rendering, stability over time, strong light output from a 5mm height and an exceptional dimming quality all played important roles during this project. Thanks to Eleber of Vicenza, Italy, we were also able to maximize the SORAA optical light engine as well.

Did the project meet the client’s vision and expectations?

Tell us more about you, your work and your approach to lighting. 
I&#8217;ve been working in the lighting industry for 35 years. Throughout my career, I have illuminated theaters, concerts, office spaces, architecture, museums and exhibitions.
When it comes to lighting, my winning mix is composed of quality, respect, creativity and experimentation. Light affects our quality of life directly, and too often we forget that.
I am very scrupulous and attentive to my customers’ needs. I always pay close attention to works of art that enlighten. Respecting these pieces allows an artist’s vision to be shared with future generations!

Thanks to my many years of experience, I am often called to perform “miracles.” For example, during an exhibition at Mart of Rovereto (one of the largest modern and contemporary Italian art museums) featuring Amedeo Modigliani’s works, the curator entrusted me with lighting the exhibition. In the end, it turned out to be spectacular!
How do you think the lighting industry will change in the future?
We still have a lot to explore both technically and emotionally. I hope that light can become more “human” and less technical. That&#8217;s why I love <a href="https://www.ecosenselighting.com/products/soraa/#models">SORAA lamps</a>&#8230;they make our vision of the world more real!

In the ancient city of Rome, sunlight showcases a number of architectural triumphs, from the Colosseum’s grand arcades to the Trevi Fountain’s sparkling waters. Natural light touches another Roman icon—the Baths of Diocletian—but only SORAA lighting could do an exhibition in the timeless space justice.
Featuring 80 masterpieces by twentieth century artists, “Je Suis L’autre. Giacometti, Picasso e gli Altri. Il Primitivismo Nella Scultura del Novecento” (transl. “I Am The Other. Giacometti, Picasso and Others. Primitivism in 20th Century Sculpture”) explored works by renowned artists and pieces from different cultures that inspired them.
Illuminating diverse works of art requires precise, balanced lighting. Claudio Cervelli, a lighting designer and AILD (Associazione Italiana Lighting Designer) partner, successfully illuminated the exhibit spanning years, cultures and places with SORAA.

How did the client relationship begin?
An architect I worked with in the past asked me to work with him again to solve the lighting design for this challenging exhibition. The goal was to offer spectacular lighting that would showcase the exhibited works while being mindful of their conservation. The ideal lighting experience was to accompany the visitor throughout the exhibition path, making every detail of the objects pop while transporting them through an exciting and ancestral world.
What lighting challenges did you face and how did SORAA lighting match the specific needs of this project?
The exhibition’s curators placed materials with different light sensitivities side by side, which required a precise and flexible lighting approach. Achieving a good balance of light levels while leveraging the SORAA Snap System allowed me to solve these challenges. The great quality of light and the powerful and expressive system of snap-on lenses make a world of difference.
SORAA’s excellent color rendering, stability over time, strong light output from a 5mm height and an exceptional dimming quality all played important roles during this project. Thanks to Eleber of Vicenza, Italy, we were also able to maximize the SORAA optical light engine as well.

DR. NAKAMURA: Researchers recently found the sleep-related hormone, melatonin, may decrease when we see blue LED light. In other words, if we use white light made with blue LEDs at night, we may have increased difficulty falling asleep. At SORAA, we have been able to create white light with violet LEDs instead of blue, meaning people can still enjoy beautiful white light without the intensity of blue.
How do you think blue-free lighting options will revolutionize the lighting industry?
DR. NAKAMURA: No other LED or lighting manufacturer has ever designed a completely blue-free light source. My real gateway into the art world came with Pret A Diner—a pop-up dining experience, which I founded with my former partner in 2011. It was an ephemeral dining venture in iconic locations across Europe; an ambitious collaboration between Michelin Star Chefs, art galleries, famous mixologists and musicians and performers.
I was the creative director of Pret A Diner and it gave me the platform to transform some pretty incredible spaces while exhibiting and selling my artwork. Over a span of 3 years, I opened 13 restaurants and was exhausted, to say the least. The sudden death of my father and the necessity to take a break from it all is what opened the door to leaving everything behind and dedicating myself to my art full time. After all, it&#8217;s the work of an artist to turn dreams into responsibilities.
How would you describe your artistic style?
I harness the power of neon gas to manifest my symbolic and sentimental statements in various environments that consist of short, punctuated truths mirroring the ingenuity and malaise of humankind.
The nature of my installations is experiential. They influence the viewer’s awareness of language, emotion and context that stimulate feelings of inspiration, reflection and curiosity. My work is an interplay between language, interpretation, contrast and contradiction. At times, it’s ironic, often humorous and subliminally subversive.

My work is born from my dreams and search for meaning. It’s all about confrontation, empowerment and expansion. It’s about sharing old wisdom and internal mantras outwardly; about challenging, summoning and even seducing my viewers into considering the weight of the messages and truisms I strive to convey. This intention and drive shapes my ever-evolving style: a play of light between semiotics and the somatic experience.
What is one of your favorite art installations?
Because we are talking about light, I immediately think of the light architecture of James Turrell. I see what he created as light installations; when the sun shines through the forms he made and hits the walls at different angles, it illuminates its power. Light is fleeting and intangible, but incredibly powerful. To see someone working with it intentionally the way I strive to, manifesting with precision to show the viewers the capacity light has, is moving and motivating.
What inspires you and your work?
I’m inspired by a plethora of fluctuating elements, from current issues, current feelings to past reflections and revelations. Poets, philosophers, mystics and the works my father inspired me to seek outwardly and inwardly give me the impetus to form words out of neon. Nature and my dreams, however, are my greatest inspiration
What do you hope people learn and/or feel when they view your work?
My work is quite personal, drawn from my life and dreams, but ironically, this is what makes it universal. After all, we are all one. I hope my work conveys my own attempts to live every moment with conscious intention by inspiring in viewers a moment of reflection and introspection.
It is the spectator and not life that art really mirrors. Because I believe this, I believe that every person can take from my work exactly what they need to see and feel in the moment they encounter it. So, finally, it is up to the viewer to observe their own reactions and configure their own reading.
What inspired you to choose light art as your preferred medium?
I have always been significantly affected by light. It deeply impacts my emotions and state of being. I pursued a master’s degree in lighting design and developed a very deep appreciation for the technical aspects of light. I still have this appreciation and I always create and install with precision. I have an eye for details and I can’t look away until what I want to create is done perfectly.
I love neon. When I came to it you could say I had a love affair with it, and that hasn’t ended. Working with glass, noble gas and light is exactly what I need to be doing. The fragility, complexity and spectrum of colors that can be achieved with lots of little tricks is incomparable to any other light source.

What does light symbolize to you as an individual?
The beauty of darkness is that it forces you to create light. My life has become an ongoing process of turning darkness into light. Light does not sugarcoat; it illuminates. Coming from my childhood with my mother’s knack for design and perfectly curated lighting and my father’s words of wisdom fostered my interest in light design and spiritualism.
Both light and spirituality have to be handled with extreme care and dedication. It is this level of attention that I appreciate deeply. I have to show up for my work just as my work shows up for me. My life has not always been easy, but through the process of creation, I have been able to heal and remain present, evolving and fearless. Light is the language of the Gods. Text is the language of Humans. I work between the two.
How do you think light impacts humans as they experience art?
Light is everything. It draws us in and directs our attention. It is a powerful tool for creating and curating that can make or break a piece of art or an art show.
How do you choose a color for each art piece when illuminating your work?
This is purely intuitive. Sometimes, when conceptualizing an artwork, I get a “download.” Often, when I am installing an artwork, the vision for the next piece comes to me in full color. Sometimes, it is an aesthetic choice, but I’m mostly guided by the process of creating. Things don’t always come easily, but they come naturally. I know my colors and surroundings well.
How does light play a role in all art, regardless of medium?
As I mentioned before, light is everything—from gallery shows to art fairs, from billboards to studio lighting. Light is the cornerstone of how art moves through the world and is displayed, which in turn deeply influences the viewer’s experience of the artwork and world.
Is there a specific color that you tend to use often when creating art? What does that mean to you?
The color I use most is called Salmon Rose, which comes from an Italian glass company. It&#8217;s the perfect synthesis of calmness, warmth, subtlety and sophistication. It&#8217;s a great color to live with. It’s important to take into account the livable factor of colors because neon can be blinding and bright. A dimmer is always obligatory !
You mentioned in your manifesto that your works were a result of coping with the turbulence of your childhood. Which art piece moved or inspired you the most?
A piece with my late father’s handwriting, “See you on the other side…”, was one of my first artworks. It was a collaboration with my dad. No one knew he was going to go so soon. But, he is always with me, and having this piece in my life is a beautiful reminder.

An Artist is Born

Tell us about your path to becoming an artist.
I was definitely born an artist. My mother was a country music singer and interior designer with a very trained eye, which I think I developed from her. My father was a businessman by trade but a real intellectual and philosopher of sorts. He would have wise quotes or truisms for just about anything.
I was born with a heightened sensitivity to light, which affected me a lot in grade school. Lighting and contemporary art was always an important feature in our family home and I have definitely adopted my parent’s obsession with lighting, which probably influenced how and why I chose to work with it.
Olivia Steele
My real gateway into the art world came with Pret A Diner—a pop-up dining experience, which I founded with my former partner in 2011. It was an ephemeral dining venture in iconic locations across Europe; an ambitious collaboration between Michelin Star Chefs, art galleries, famous mixologists and musicians and performers.
I was the creative director of Pret A Diner and it gave me the platform to transform some pretty incredible spaces while exhibiting and selling my artwork. Over a span of 3 years, I opened 13 restaurants and was exhausted, to say the least. The sudden death of my father and the necessity to take a break from it all is what opened the door to leaving everything behind and dedicating myself to my art full time. After all, it’s the work of an artist to turn dreams into responsibilities.
How would you describe your artistic style?
I harness the power of neon gas to manifest my symbolic and sentimental statements in various environments that consist of short, punctuated truths mirroring the ingenuity and malaise of humankind.
The nature of my installations is experiential. They influence the viewer’s awareness of language, emotion and context that stimulate feelings of inspiration, reflection and curiosity. My work is an interplay between language, interpretation, contrast and contradiction. At times, it’s ironic, often humorous and subliminally subversive.

Have you had to overcome significant lighting challenges when creating one of your installations?
All of my pieces involve very big lighting challenges. Certainly, the traveling inground pieces that everyone jumps on are very challenging, because no one makes high end LED lighting components that can be sent to almost any environment (in addition to dealing with water, snow, heat and humidity—and then have 10,000 people jump on them).
It is a pretty big engineering challenge. Interestingly enough, we have been able to get the components, like the drivers, really stable. But LEDs are relatively delicate.

We put the LEDs through a lot, so that has been very challenging. I have a permanent outdoor piece in Minnesota across from Target Field, which is a large, interactive light and sound tarp. The weather conditions in Minnesota are very extreme and we have been able to build the LEDs to withstand the intense cold and hot temperatures. They get stressed when temperatures go from super hot to super cold and then back again, however. It is an ongoing challenge and we are consistently coming up with ways to make our LED components truly weatherable outside.
How do you think light impacts humans in the way they experience art?
The history of art is really a history of light. Art history began when we used fire, which was light, and took charcoal out of those fires to draw figures on walls. When you go back through the history of painting, it centers on the history of painters using pigments to capture light in these scenes.

It absolutely makes sense that today’s artists are not just playing with paints, but also playing with light, because we can. To me, I think the history of art is a history of creating and using light in different kinds of mediums. It is about playing with what things look like through the idea of light across times and places.
How do you choose colors for pieces you create—whether that is the pigment of the colors themselves or the colors used to light them?
Super intuitively. Often, we have ways to completely tune the piece for each project. I will sit at the sites and tune the colors so they seem cohesive. It is an intuitive feeling for how they look within the site and the way I feel the community is going to feel about the color, in addition to how I feel we should create the playful interactions.

If the piece is in a community that might enjoy something a little more playful, I might be more colorful. If it is a place where I want to tone it down, I choose more simple colors, such as blue tones. I make that intuitive call from the site, usually on the night before the exhibition opens.
There are certain phases in my life where I do not like specific color palettes and my poor team has to deal with me on this. But usually, there is this intuitive feeling about what I think the colors should be and that relates to the here and now and the place.
Is there one color or color palette that embodies your passion for art?
No. I also have to deal with the paradigm of the materials we are using. There is a particular rotational molded plastic we use for a lot of our temporary traveling work that is a necessary material. We cannot change the material given what is available, due to some of the constraints of some projects. That plastic, for example, looks absolutely awful with certain colors. So, a lot of the ground-based pieces stick to blue hues because yellows or greens look putrid through the plastic. I could take a very beautiful green and project it through our plastic and it would look bad.

Also, with some of the ceiling-based pieces, I will have a beautiful color palette in mind, such as certain purple hues. Then, I get to the site and because of supplemental lighting, the color palette will not work. In these cases, I have to shift and adjust the colors.
What does light symbolize to you as an individual?
Light is life. It is this fundamental core component of everything that is alive. We wouldn&#8217;t be alive without the light of the sun; it is so inherent to life in every aspect.
What are some tips you would give professional lighting designers to breathe new life into the way they conceptualize spaces?
It is quite interesting—I just described the constraints of the plastic material we use. I really like the way light moves through the material, though; it twinkles and I love it. You can achieve a twinkle effect from light through glass, right? I think there is a flatness to some lighting designs as they lack this twinkling dynamic. I think there is more than just the LED when it comes to lighting design. Designers can also experiment and pay close attention to how materials play around the LED.

There is an artist group, for example, that puts LEDs in big, laser cut metal forms that project light. The visual effect blows everyone&#8217;s minds. The relationship between the forms and the light is as interesting as the light itself. You see their relationship in the shadows, which create a sort of theatrical experience.
What do you wish you could experience more of in everyday commercial spaces?
Certainly, a hotel room featuring lighting that could follow circadian rhythms to encourage sleep and waking up would be really interesting. It seems like we will probably have that sooner than later. That would be pragmatic from a human use perspective. In lobbies, I would like to see more unique illuminated forms, such as custom chandeliers. You can take your lobby budget and commission a sculpture that also serves as the chandelier.
What else would you like to share?
We are working on one of the most exciting projects I have ever done right now, which is going to be one of the bigger interactive pieces in the world. It will be a 40-foot tall steel and vintage glass LED Aurora Borealis hanging in the new terminal in one of Minneapolis’ airports.

I think it is going to be an interesting piece because there are thousands of glass bulbs that we are creating a custom LED fixture for. What you get is this super modern LED interactive Aurora Borealis paired with the vintage glass.
I think it is a very exciting time. I think as more of these components and more of this technology become available to artists, designers and architects, there can be more and more creative applications. The systems are in place to allow for more and more of these unique applications and completely different sculptures, products or designs to use lighting in interesting ways.

Similar to lighting designers and specifiers, artist Jen Lewin evaluates LEDs and drivers to create impactful works of art. She taps her love of architecture and mathematics to transform environments with light, and has developed ingenious lighting solutions to conquer daunting engineering challenges. Most importantly, Lewin keeps the human experience in mind when determining light sources and colors for her human-centric installations.
In the first part of this series, Lewin walked us through her path to becoming an artist, along with sharing her lifelong inspirations and most memorable experiences. Now, Lewin dives more into lighting and the role it plays in her work.

Have you had to overcome significant lighting challenges when creating one of your installations?
All of my pieces involve very big lighting challenges. Certainly, the traveling inground pieces that everyone jumps on are very challenging, because no one makes high end LED lighting components that can be sent to almost any environment (in addition to dealing with water, snow, heat and humidity—and then have 10,000 people jump on them).
It is a pretty big engineering challenge. Interestingly enough, we have been able to get the components, like the drivers, really stable. But LEDs are relatively delicate.

We put the LEDs through a lot, so that has been very challenging. I have a permanent outdoor piece in Minnesota across from Target Field, which is a large, interactive light and sound tarp. The weather conditions in Minnesota are very extreme and we have been able to build the LEDs to withstand the intense cold and hot temperatures. They get stressed when temperatures go from super hot to super cold and then back again, however. It is an ongoing challenge and we are consistently coming up with ways to make our LED components truly weatherable outside.
How do you think light impacts humans in the way they experience art?
The history of art is really a history of light. Art history began when we used fire, which was light, and took charcoal out of those fires to draw figures on walls. When you go back through the history of painting, it centers on the history of painters using pigments to capture light in these scenes.

It absolutely makes sense that today’s artists are not just playing with paints, but also playing with light, because we can. To me, I think the history of art is a history of creating and using light in different kinds of mediums. It is about playing with what things look like through the idea of light across times and places.
How do you choose colors for pieces you create—whether that is the pigment of the colors themselves or the colors used to light them?
Super intuitively. Often, we have ways to completely tune the piece for each project. I will sit at the sites and tune the colors so they seem cohesive. It is an intuitive feeling for how they look within the site and the way I feel the community is going to feel about the color, in addition to how I feel we should create the playful interactions.

If the piece is in a community that might enjoy something a little more playful, I might be more colorful. If it is a place where I want to tone it down, I choose more simple colors, such as blue tones. I make that intuitive call from the site, usually on the night before the exhibition opens.
There are certain phases in my life where I do not like specific color palettes and my poor team has to deal with me on this. But usually, there is this intuitive feeling about what I think the colors should be and that relates to the here and now and the place.
Is there one color or color palette that embodies your passion for art?
No. I also have to deal with the paradigm of the materials we are using. There is a particular rotational molded plastic we use for a lot of our temporary traveling work that is a necessary material. We cannot change the material given what is available, due to some of the constraints of some projects. That plastic, for example, looks absolutely awful with certain colors. So, a lot of the ground-based pieces stick to blue hues because yellows or greens look putrid through the plastic. I could take a very beautiful green and project it through our plastic and it would look bad.

Also, with some of the ceiling-based pieces, I will have a beautiful color palette in mind, such as certain purple hues. Then, I get to the site and because of supplemental lighting, the color palette will not work. In these cases, I have to shift and adjust the colors.
What does light symbolize to you as an individual?
Light is life. It is this fundamental core component of everything that is alive. We wouldn’t be alive without the light of the sun; it is so inherent to life in every aspect.
What are some tips you would give professional lighting designers to breathe new life into the way they conceptualize spaces?
It is quite interesting—I just described the constraints of the plastic material we use. I really like the way light moves through the material, though; it twinkles and I love it. You can achieve a twinkle effect from light through glass, right? I think there is a flatness to some lighting designs as they lack this twinkling dynamic. I think there is more than just the LED when it comes to lighting design. Designers can also experiment and pay close attention to how materials play around the LED.

There is an artist group, for example, that puts LEDs in big, laser cut metal forms that project light. The visual effect blows everyone’s minds. The relationship between the forms and the light is as interesting as the light itself. You see their relationship in the shadows, which create a sort of theatrical experience.
What do you wish you could experience more of in everyday commercial spaces?
Certainly, a hotel room featuring lighting that could follow circadian rhythms to encourage sleep and waking up would be really interesting. It seems like we will probably have that sooner than later. That would be pragmatic from a human use perspective. In lobbies, I would like to see more unique illuminated forms, such as custom chandeliers. You can take your lobby budget and commission a sculpture that also serves as the chandelier.
What else would you like to share?
We are working on one of the most exciting projects I have ever done right now, which is going to be one of the bigger interactive pieces in the world. It will be a 40-foot tall steel and vintage glass LED Aurora Borealis hanging in the new terminal in one of Minneapolis’ airports.

I think it is going to be an interesting piece because there are thousands of glass bulbs that we are creating a custom LED fixture for. What you get is this super modern LED interactive Aurora Borealis paired with the vintage glass.
I think it is a very exciting time.
